Texas Best Criminal Lawyer, Hall of Fame

John Wesley Hardin  Killed his first man at age 14 in 1868. Hardin was a native of Bonham, Texas. At the age of 21, he had killed 39 men. Texas Rangers tracked him down in Florida and sent him to prison for killing a man in self defense. Pardoned in 1894, he opened a law practice in El Paso, Texas where he was shot in the back of the head by the local lawman while relaxing in the local saloon.

Richard “Racehorse” Haynes
Among others, Racehorse successfully defended oil millionaire, Cullen Davis, twice on murder charges. He also defended Dr. John Hill of Houston in a murder trial that ended in mistrial.

Texas Best Judge, Hall of Fame 

 Judge Roy Bean
Law west of the Pecos. Judge Bean was appointed temporary Justice of the Peace of Vingarroon by the Texas Rangers in 1882. He later moved to Langtry. Judge Bean once hung a defendant because he couldn’t understand his Spanish. Court was held in The Judge’s saloon, The Jersey Lilley.


Texas Best Texas Ranger, Hall of Fame

In 1823 Stephen F. Austin organized a band of 10 men to “range” around his new settlement. The Texas Rangers were formally organized on Ocober, 17 1835. As of September 1996 the Texas rangers number 105.

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were cold blooded killers of 14 in two years. They were cut down by Texas Rangers in 1934 with over 200 bullets.

Sam Bass (Mitchell Ind.)
1851-1878
Arrived in Denton County in 1870. His hideout was 4 miles south of Denton on I-35 W. The hill is known as Pilot Knob. The property is now owned by Ross Perot.

Bell Star, ( Myra Maybelle Shirley )
Lived in Scyne south of Dallas and married outlaw Jim Reed of Collin County. She later married Sam Starr a Cherokee Indian in Oklahoma.

First six gun produced in 1839 was named the TEXAS, a.34 caliber. The TEXAS six shooter gave the Texas Rangers the edge they needed in the Indian wars. Texas Ranger Captain Samuel Walker and Samuel Colt later developed the .44 caliber Walker-Colt. In 1873 the legendary Colt .45 was introduced and was known as the PEACEMAKER. God made some men big and some men small, but Sam Colt made them all equal.
